Adult Celiac Disease - An Update
نویسنده
چکیده
Celiac disease is a highly prevalent disorder of the intestine but vast majority of the patients remain undiagnosed. Both genetics and environmental factors play into account. Patients develop permanent intolerance to gluten leading to inflammation of the intestinal villi and ultimately villous atrophy. As a result, patients need to be on gluten free diet to lead a normal life. Patients could be symptom free, or may present with intestinal or extra-intestinal manifestations. Positive celiac serology, characteristic histology and clinical improvement on gluten free diet are the hallmarks for the diagnosis of celiac disease. Rarely, celiac patients can develop fatal complications which have been discussed in this review. With the better understanding of the pathogenesis, new targets have been identified for the treatment of celiac disease.
